Graves and links to records
The website Find a Grave has searchable details of 626 graves in Sidmouth Cemetery. Details can be seen on this page
The District Council, which owns and is responsible for Sidmouth and Sidbury Cemeteries, has recently put up a register search on its website, which “will allow you to search by name, date of death or plot number for each of our cemeteries”.
A correspondent wrote ‘The cemetery is a very special place for myself and my children as we spent much of lockdowns in there for our daily walks. I love walking through there. Thank you so much for caring for it.’ and also told us a story about a grave they had found ‘I took many photos of the headstones to ‘look up’ when I got home. One particular one, was of a Colonel who was en route with his Argentinian wife back to America. They stopped in Sidmouth and, unfortunately, he died of a tropical disease. I found his family on Ancestry and sent them a pic of his headstone. So many fascinating stories.’ Sadly, although we wrote back, no further details were forthcoming, if you know more then let us know!
