Trees in flower at Sidmouth Cemetery

There are some fabulous trees up at the Cemetery on Temple Street/Winslade Road in Sidmouth, adding to the character of this charming space. And by appreciating the trees of Sidmouth Cemetery, we can really appreciate the variety and diversity of both formal and natural ‘greenery’ on the site.

Last May, there was a wonderful tree walk led by Ed Dolphin of the Sidmouth Arboretum, when he took members of the CSC working party around the Cemetery looking at many of the fine specimens.

And in November last year, the Cherishing Sidmouth Cemeteries team were part of the VGS stall celebrating trees with the Arboretum, where the volunteers were able to talk trees, thanks to a wonderful Tree Guide to Sidmouth Cemetery put together by CSC working party member Mick Street.

In early spring into early summer, there are several trees in leaf and in flower around the Cemetery. Here’s a magnificent example of an Indian Horse Chestnut in full flower from last weekend, taken by CSC member Tess Bisson:

And here is a selection taken by Ed Dolphin back in May 2020 – of a Japanese Cherry, a Variegated Tulip Tree and a Yellow Buckeye:
