The art of composting at Sidmouth Cemetery

A lot of what the volunteers from the Cherishing Sidmouth Cemeteries get up to is to clear those areas which they can – and to then use some of those materials to add to the growing compost heap.

And a good compost heap is not only essential as a source of mulch and nutrients for gardening – one more activity the volunteers get up to of a Thursday morning. It also makes an excellent home for both slow worms and beetles at the Cemetery.

Here’s a shot of stuff being gathered in the spring, in readiness to cart off by wheelbarrow to the compost heap:

Here’s the compost heap covered in bindweed in another section of the Cemetery:

And here is the same heap cleared of bindweed – ready for more material and more composting:
