Arnos Vale Cemetery: ‘not all manicured’

These pages often return to Arnos Vale Cemetery: an inspiration lying in the heart of Bristol. As a recent piece says, it is the South West’s oldest garden cemetery – and demonstrates that cemeteries can be beautiful outdoor spaces.

As the piece goes on to say, this wonderful place is also a showcase for how we can be properly managing churchyards and cemeteries

But it’s not just the carefully tended, more formal areas of this historic site which are striking – as noted from a recent visit to Arnos Vale Cemetery by a member of the Cherishing Sidmouth Cemeteries group:

As you can see from the first picture there is a grave on the left under brambles and one further along so presume a lot more hidden. There are a lot of areas just like the wild area at Sidmouth and think it’s important to mention it is certainly not all manicured. A lady we were talking to said at one time not sure exactly when they had 70 staff looking after it.
