Raking up the strimmings at Sidmouth Cemetery

The issues around managing the Cemetery’s grass have been many over the years – one of them being strimming up at Sidmouth Cemetery, which has meant leaving a lot of long grass cuttings on the ground which doesn’t look good and doesn’t do the flora and fauna that’s lying underneath much good.

That’s where the volunteers of the Cherishing Sidmouth Cemeteries working party come in – raking back the grass cut by the Streetscene team.

Interestingly, the strimmers work by flailing plastic strips which efficiently slice through even long and wet grass – and these are coloured red, both so that the operator can see where they are working, but also to see where any of the strips themselves get ripped off.

And here we have a photo of a volunteer (a newbie: welcome to the working party!) – picking up rakings which include some of these red plastic strips!
